Okay, so they've got a new CEO for the Johannesburg Property Company (JPC), Musawakhe Makhunga. Or "Musah," as they apparently want us to call him. Big deal. Another press release hero swooping in to "transform" things. I've seen this movie before.
The article is dripping with praise. "Visionary leader," "championing inclusive urban development"... Give me a break. It's the same PR garbage they always shovel. They even gave him an award, one of South Africa's Top 100 Public Sector Leaders. Top 100? Out of how many? And who are these "South African Institute of Black Property Practitioners" anyway? Sounds suspect, if you ask me.
"That recognition was never about me alone," Makhunga says. Oh, please. It's always about you, buddy. Every CEO loves to pretend they're just a humble servant of the people, but let's be real, it's about the power, the prestige, and the fat paycheck.
And what's this about "navigating a complex transition" and "infrastructure backlogs"? Sounds like they're trying to spin some serious problems into opportunities for our new hero.
So, one of his "first successes" was moving staff from the Metro Centre to new offices in Newtown. "It was about more than buildings," he says. Right, it was about optics. Making it look like they're doing something, anything, to improve things.

But did they actually improve anything? Or did they just shuffle people around and pat themselves on the back? Are the new offices actually better? Are they more efficient? Or did they just spend a ton of taxpayer money on a fancy new space that doesn't actually solve any problems? I bet the old office is still sitting there empty, costing a fortune to maintain.
Wait a minute... Newtown? Isn't that area gentrifying like crazy? Is this "Office Space Optimisation Strategy" actually a sneaky way to drive up property values and push out the poor? Just asking questions here, offcourse.
Johannesburg, huh? Reminds me of that other article I saw about the jacaranda blooms turning the city purple every spring. All those pretty flowers... it's like putting lipstick on a pig. Sure, the city looks nice for a few weeks, but what about the rest of the year? What about the crime, the poverty, the corruption? Are those problems going to magically disappear because the trees are blooming? I doubt it.
And speaking of jacarandas, they're not even native to South Africa! They're an import from Brazil. So, basically, Johannesburg is celebrating a foreign invader while ignoring its own problems. That's just perfect.
It's the same old story. A new guy comes in, makes a bunch of promises, and spouts a bunch of corporate buzzwords. And we're all supposed to believe that things are going to be different this time. But let's be real, nothing ever changes. It's all just a big show to keep us distracted while the powerful people continue to do whatever they want. Maybe I'm too cynical but I've seen this play out too many times to count. Wake me up when something actually changes.
